what are the Best Garmin Foretrex 401 Handheld GPS Units Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sale 2023 & Deals? The Garmin Foretrex 401 is somewhat unusual. This wrist-mounted unit is not a full-fledged sports watch, nor does it have the feature found in some of the more silent handheld GPS receivers. It is probably best suited to folks wanting to decrease the weight of backcountry equipment and have the device conveniently available.
Among my Foretrex101s died a couple of weeks back and I decided to replace it with the newly published Foretrex401. It arrived mid-week and that I had no trouble accessing and launching the Foretrex401 generated gpx file with Easy/ExpertGPS and Topofusion. I had been expecting to utilize the 401 along with the Garmin heart rate monitor during my mt bike rides rather than my Edge205 and different HRM. The 401 had no difficulty picking up the HR studying and displaying the values.
Not surprisingly, the Garmin website does not have any substantial information of the 401 as of yet without a discussion of what software will utilize the 401. When I emailed Garmin regarding data transfer software and the spanner work under the Setup menu, then I obtained the following rather uninformative answer:
“Thanks for contacting Garmin International. I’m pleased to answer your questions. On the bright side, Garmin Connect, our online fitness website, will support the Garmin Outdoor product line in the second half of 2009. Meanwhile, we advise that you upload tasks from those devices to MotionBased. Unfortunately, there’s not much documentation available for Spanner other than the setup instructions found on the download page.
The above reply is totally lame referring to outdated/non-supported links along with a less than helpful Wikipedia reference. Even though it’s currently well beyond the”second half of 2009” Garmin Connect does not include the Foretrex 401, as well as the motion-based site, has basically been abandoned by Garmin leaving the Foretrex401 in effect unsupported by Garmin except for the simplest data transport. The Foretrex401 manual makes no reference to the spanner function or what a gpx file is on how to take advantage of it.
At this point, the Foretex401 is apparently a corporate orphan that no Garmin division is able or willing to encourage. It’s unclear if it’s meant for jumping out of airplanes (jumpmaster purpose ), hiking (altimeter/compass), cycling/fitness (HR/cadence) or even supplying a heads-up when the ordinance will explode (countdown-up/timer).
In addition to the above, work smart, the 401 adds a USB interface, faster satellite acquisition and wireless information transfer to the venerable Foretrex101. It’s slightly more compact in size than the 101, has much better strap attachments and stores the information is in a gpx file. Operationally the Foretex401 does what is it supposed to perform but with no software contained, undocumented functions and almost non-existent technical support, most buyers will be frustrated in attempting to use the Foretrex401 right from the box. A printed quick start guide is in the box but the manual at a pdf on the CD.
As mentioned above, with some tinkering and non-Garmin applications I have been able to list and see the Foretex401 paths, waypoints, routes, and other data as well as transfer the data to GoogleEarth. For what Garmin lists as a basic handheld GPS it should be much more simple to operate and transfer information.
