New World Review: Black Friday Sales
Finally, Amazon’s New World is accessible in our world, which is now considered to be the old world, I suppose. and I haven’t been able to access it yet because its servers are so crowded on day one. But I’ve spent the last week playing a polished version of this MMO set in the American colonies, albeit without nearly the same number of players or queue times that many are currently encountering.
Notably, most of that time was spent running around as a level 60 pre-made character and prodding different Corrupted bee hives to see what I could shake out of them so that you don’t have to. This is because IGN’s official wiki guide was written in large part by me. But now that I’ve had some time to explore and get a feel for how everything operates, I thought I’d share my initial thoughts on this eagerly anticipated MMORPG.
The basic idea of New World is as follows: You are a member of a pirate ship crew that has set sail in pursuit of the fabled island of Aeternum, which is said to be home to a wealth of riches. You wind up beached on the sand with nothing but the rags on your back, in the middle of a storm that has been imbued with the island’s dark energy, dubbed Corruption, and have to deal with both monsters and the other human occupants of the island (survivors from past shipwrecks).
In essence, it resembles a Pirates of the Caribbean MMO with a high fantasy twist. This is a fantastic scenario for an original game, and it’s excellent that Amazon Games appears to have spoken with experts when creating the real-world influences and civilizations that it depicts. At least that is what the splash screen states. However, I haven’t started exploring its primary story missions, so it’s too early to judge whether it will keep me interested over what will undoubtedly be a protracted voyage.
It’s important to note right away that everything looks absolutely stunning on Amazon’s Lumberyard engine, which is built on CryTek’s CryEngine and does an excellent job of generating real-time volumetric lighting and managing numerous actors and effects at once.
Not only are the draw distances astounding for an MMO, but on the highest settings, all of the grass and trees shake in the breeze and produce realistic-looking shadows. In its favor, the general appearance of New World reminds me a lot of The Witcher 3. I’m running an RTX 2080 Super on a Ryzen 3900X with a massive 32GB of high-speed RAM, so take note that my computer is very beefed up.
