Beyond Light in Destiny 2 pioneers new territory while some elements are still stuck in the past.
Beyond Light, the most recent expansion for Destiny 2, could have been called Destiny 3 if Bungie and Activision hadn’t parted up last year. Beyond Light, the first of three upcoming expansions, boldly moves the game in a new path. Examples include the story’s darker, morally ambiguous tone, the elimination of heritage content from Destiny 2’s sandbox, or our formerly-model Guardians giving in and using The Darkness’ destructive power. This version of Destiny 2 is very different from the one we’ve been playing for the last three years.
But while Beyond Light departs from its predecessor in some significant ways, it also repeatedly commits some of the same errors. My Guardian’s exploits on the snow-covered moon of Europa occasionally left me feeling left out in the cold in a very familiar way due to a campaign that is too short, an endgame that requires you to grind the same activities repeatedly, and a sandbox that looks continuously imbalanced.
The Beyond Light campaign starts off with a bang when The Darkness, Destiny’s enduring foe, blinks out the existence of numerous planets in our solar system. You are sent to Europa to discover answers, but oddly enough, the adventure that follows is completely irrelevant, and, to be honest, you never really find the answers you’re seeking for. Instead, you find yourself squaring up against a particularly wicked Eliksni by the name of Eramis, who has figured out how to use a cosmis ice called Stasis to wield the awesome power of The Darkness.
Eramis is the first Destiny villain I’ve ever empathized with, which makes this plot one of the series’ strongest (and even felt a little sorry for). The Drifter, Variks, Eris Morn, and The Exo Stranger, who we haven’t seen since 2014 and who now takes the spotlight in a huge manner – and this time she finally has time to explain – are just a few of the best characters in Destiny to earn a ton of well-deserved screen time.
The campaign, like other Destiny expansions, ends abruptly after about 6 hours, leaving you with a lot of unfinished business that is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon. Because of this, the conflict with Eramis and her Stasis-wielding army ultimately comes across as a side quest in an epic voyage that may go on for the duration of the following two expansions (and possibly beyond).
Despite the final chapter’s flaws and the spoilers in its margins, Dragon Age Library Edition, Volume 1 is a solid compilation overall. While newbies are likely to be perplexed by the world’s past, they may still enjoy the harsh fights, intelligent narrative, magnificent and detailed visuals, and likable, thoughtful cast of characters. Hardcore Dragon Age fans will love the deeper dig into cultures and lore.
