Review Of Gears Tactics

Switching to the turn-based tactics subgenre produces an amazing and awesome-looking outcome.

I can’t think of another long-running series more suitable to transition from third-person shooter into XCOM-style turn-based tactics than this one, given the life-or-death need on hiding in the Gears (of War) games. The XCOM spin-off Gears Tactics takes a more narrowly focused approach to the genre, forgoing the XCOM formula’s larger strategic layer in favor of pitched tactical fight after tactical combat. The majority of those bouts are gratifying puzzles with superbly polished graphical payoff, which comes at the expense of some replayability.

The plot of Gears Tactics takes place 12 years before the events of the first Gears of War; of course, it’s business as usual when it comes to joyfully hacking alligator-looking men in half with chainsaws. Though Kait’s father, Gabriel, never really comes into his own as a distinctive main character, we are able to fill in a few holes in the Diaz family history prior to Outsiders thanks to some brilliantly animated sequences.

He has a troubled background, having led a disastrous operation and gone into self-imposed exile in the COG motorpool. However, being summoned back for one more job doesn’t really change his views about anything; even before we met him, he was fed up with the COG’s corrupt leadership.

Even the fierce conflict between grizzled old Gear Sid and the snarling engineer/sniper Mikayla is never very significant. And despite some indications that he would try, Ukkon, the antagonist, never grows beyond a one-dimensional evil. The dialogue is nevertheless written and performed well enough to accomplish its goals of creating the distinctive Gears flavor and providing us with a monster to chase without interfering with the action.

Gabe commands a group of up to four Gears into combat against a variety of recognizable Locust foes, which include everything from straightforward grunts and exploding Tickers to tricky Theron Guards and buffing Kantuses (introduced at a steady clip throughout with a gruesome close-up and a few tactical tips).

All of them have unique and intriguing abilities to oppose, such as some that attack automatically if you approach too closely (countering the instant-death Lancer chainsaws) and others that, upon death, release a cloud of incapacitating toxic gas to deter the practice of hanging the dead.

Only the melee units—including those Ticker jerks—were ever a source of irritation for me because I could never be sure if they were close enough to my soldiers to strike them or not.
