Resident Evil Village Reviews

Resident Evil 4’s impact was immediately apparent as soon as I entered Resident Evil Village’s eerie rural location. I was almost immediately encircled by angry local Lycans. I frantically searched for shotgun rounds and bookcases to block doors as the swarm surged in, only to narrowly escape death. As a terrific throwback to the introduction of Shinji Mikami’s magnum opus, it is an emotional welcome that is made even more frenzied by being seen from the first-person perspective.

Resident Evil Village doesn’t exactly pioneer new territory on its own, but it does a good job of grafting Resident Evil 4’s best action elements onto the series’ more contemporary form established in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The result is an increasingly action-packed and gripping continuation of the Ethan Winters story.

Unfortunately for poor old Ethan, the story progresses from desperate circumstances to dreadful wolves. In Resident Evil 7, after being dragged to a hillbilly hell and back in an effort to save his wife, the player is then thrown into the unmistakably Transylvanian Village. This time, it’s his young daughter who needs to be saved after being taken by a vile group of monster maniacs, including Lady Dimitrescu, a vampire tall enough to play the lead in a Space Jam sequel, Donna Beneviento, a dollmaker with a walking, talking Bride of Chucky sidekick, Salvatore Moreau, a thoroughly repulsive merman, and Karl Heisenberg, a magnetically powered nutcase who runs a

Although none of the four managed to elicit the same level of genuine fright as the southern-fried psychopaths in Resident Evil 7’s Baker family, I still found the group to be amusingly twisted in a slightly cartoonish, Batman villain style. All four answer to the mysterious head witch, Mother Miranda. From the lavish gold-trimmed interiors of Castle Dimitrescu to the dingy mechanical works of Heisenberg’s underground facility, they preside over their own visually different territory that you must survive.

Each location has a different tone, with one requiring a more stealth-oriented approach and another leaning more toward psychological terror than actual fighting. A intriguing mystery that kept me interested during my 10-hour playthrough required me to delve beneath Village’s murkiest caverns and learn the true reason these fairytale freaks exist today.

Walking through Resident Evil Village’s streets is like going to a deadly and unsettling Disneyland, where every ride is a house of horrors. Both reveling in its frenetic violence and going back into the gradually exposed dark corners of its expansive village setting to learn the darkest plot secrets of its monstrous core cast gave me an equal rush. Boss battles are a little disappointing, but the game’s wide variety of adversaries keeps things exciting, especially on Hardcore level.

It may frustrate those who prefer more psychological horror to blowing off heads because it takes a step back from the slow-burn shocks of Resident Evil 7’s superb opening hours because it’s very much a throwback to the fast-paced action of Resident Evil 4. However, Resident Evil Village will scratch your desire for action-packed survival horror like a clutch of Lady Dimitrescu’s bizarre fingernails.
